How’d We Get Here?
The Hawks were hoping that the positives from the end of the 2018-19 season would carry over and help push a young team towards the playoff chase. While Trae Young continued to excel, Atlanta wasn’t able to take the leap as John Collins got himself suspended and the younger Hawks battled inconsistency in their first NBA foray.
Not content with the roster, the Hawks decided to buy low on Clint Capela, rolling the dice on a potentially lethal frontcourt, but not one that comes without questions. Regardless, Atlanta has chosen its version of a Big Three, and decided to add to it by spending up for Danilo Gallinari, Kris Dunn and Rajon Rondo in free agency. The Hawks had problems with shooting, perimeter defense and secondary playmaking, so consider it a clean sweep even if there’s now a few logjams to work out. Expectations will be higher this year as a result, though the jury is still out on everyone’s fit given that Capela was unable to take the court after the trade.
