2020-21 Draft Guide Team Preview: Detroit Pistons

  • How’d We Get Here?

The Pistons were hoping to make some more noise after squeaking into the playoffs in 2018-19 but everything fell apart quickly. Blake Griffin was unable to recover from last summer’s knee surgery, was extremely limited (and ineffective) in his 18 games and had to go under the knife again in January. Reggie Jackson was hurt, then got bought out. Luke Kennard impressed and then missed over 30 games with knee soreness. The Pistons were going nowhere fast and decided to dump excess cap cargo, trading Andre Drummond and his $28.5 million player option to Cleveland for nothing of consequence. Detroit’s looking to find building blocks for the future after ditching its previous core, and the road looks long and painful. At least they’ve committed to a direction.

That direction didn’t prevent them from being active in free agency. The Pistons spent up to lure Jerami Grant from the Nuggets and plucked Delon Wright away from Dallas for very little, but most of their efforts were spent on restocking the frontcourt after deciding to let Christian Wood walk. While they brought in Mason Plumlee and Jahlil Okafor, they also lost Kennard and Bruce Brown, leaving a very unsettled roster with only a few players looking like long-term answers. The draft haul was solid with Killian Hayes and Saddiq Bey coming in at good value, though Isaiah Stewart and Saben Lee were considered reaches. Troy Weaver has definitely set sail on the rebuild.
