We are now in week 7 of the NBA fantasy season, meaning you should have a rough idea of how your the course of your season might be shaping up. I’m having a rocky year across my leagues, so hopefully you are in a better spot than I am. Let’s see what type of night we had last night in this 6-game slate.
Timberwolves (110) @ Raptors (124)
The Timberwolves continue to be one of the most overhyped teams of the year, as many people projected them to be a playoff team in the weakened western conference. They are now 6-16 on the year and can’t seem to get things figured out. Zach LaVine played like a star tonight, notching 29 points (12-for-20 FG, 2-for-2 FT), six assists, three 3-pointers and two rebounds. Andrew Wiggins posted a pretty typical line with 25 points, six rebounds, one 3-pointer and one assist. Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 points, 11 rebounds, one 3-pointer, one assist and one block. Gorgui Dieng contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Ricky Rubio continues to disappoint with seven points, three rebounds, three assist and two 3-pointers. There wasn’t much production from the Minnesota bench tonight and fantasy players will have to wait until the trade deadline to find any hidden value on this roster.
The Raptors continue to be just the opposite of the Timberwolves – an actual playoff contender that shows up every night with a 15-7 record. DeMar DeRozan led the way with 27 points (7-for-20 FG, 12-for-13 FT), eight rebounds, five assists and one 3-pointer. Kyle Lowry double-doubled with 25 points, 11 assists, five 3-pointers, two rebounds and a steal. Jonas Valanciunas also double-doubled with 20 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and one block. Patrick Patterson came off the bench and added seven points, five rebounds, two 3-pointers and two assists in 30 minutes.
Nuggets (85) @ Wizards (92)
Kenneth Faried must be in coach Malone’s doghouse again as he landed a DNP-CD tonight, just one night after starting and logging only 12 minutes. Darrell Arthur got the start, but only logged 20 minutes. The real beneficiary of any Faried drama is Nikola Jokic. He had been coming along in his bench role, but the more minutes that are opened for him the better. Jokic double-doubled off the bench with 17 points, 11 rebounds, one assist and one block. The buy-low window may be closing. Danilo Gallinari added 14 points, four rebounds, one assist, one 3-pointer and one steal. Jusuf Nurkic finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and one assist in only 21 minutes as the starting center. Wilson Chandler played 32 minutes off the bench but didn’t do much, adding five points (2-for-16 FG, 1-for-8 3PT), eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. Will Barton logged 43 minutes tonight with 11 points, three assists, three steals, two rebounds and one 3-pointer.
Bradley Beal led the way for the Wizards tonight with 26 points, five assists, four 3-pointers and three rebounds. He is proving me wrong so far this season, but let’s wait and see how long his body holds up. John Wall finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block. Otto Porter has been posting early round value so far this season and added nine points, five rebounds, three steals, one assist, one 3-pointer and one block tonight. Markieff Morris scored 15 points (5-for-12 FG, 5-for-5 FT), four assists and three rebounds.
Trail Blazers (86) @ Grizzlies (88)
Tough loss the the Blazers tonight, blowing the game in the 4th quarter after being outscored 27 to 17. Damian Lillard scored 19 points (6-for-18 FG, 5-for-7 FT), three rebounds, two assists, two 3-pointers and one steal. C.J. McCollum contributed 24 points, four 3-pointers, one assist and one steal. Evan Turner started tonight for the injured Moe Harkless and scored 15 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Turner could be looking at heavy minutes with Harkless day-to-day and Al-Farouq Aminu injuring his back tonight.
For the Grizzlies, the Marc Gasol show continues. He led the way with 36 points (13-for-24 FG, 6-for-9 FT), nine rebounds, four 3-pointers and two assists. Tony Allen had a solid night with 15 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist. JaMychal Green did the dirty work on the glass tonight with six points, 18 rebounds, two assists and one steal. He has grabbed double digit rebounds in four straight games now and that seems to be his focus with Gasol doing the heavy lifting on offense. Toney Douglas added 11 points, three assists and one rebound in 27 minutes off the bench.
76ers (99) @ Pelicans (88)
The 76ers picked up their 5th win of the season. Ersan Ilyasova has been worth rostering lately and led the 76ers tonight with 23 points (9-for-16 FG, 3-for-4 FT), eight rebounds, four assists, two 3-pointers and one steal. Dario Saric came off the bench for 13 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block in 25 minutes. Joel Embiid posted another fat line, but was rather inefficient with 14 points (5-for-15 FG, 4-for-5 FT), seven rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists. Sergio Rodriguez has been coming on lately and ended tonight with 16 points, eight assists, four 3-pointers, two rebounds and a steal.
The NBA’s leading scorer was back at it again tonight as Anthony Davis logged 41 minutes and added 26 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. However, his efforts were simply not enough as the rest of the starters were pretty pathetic. Tim Frazier added seven points, six rebounds and six assists. Buddy Hield started tonight and played 34 minutes, but only notched 6 points (2-for-12 FG), four rebounds, two 3-pointers and two assists. Langston Galloway got it going off the bench with 19 points, four rebounds, three 3-pointers, two assists and a steal. Terrence Jones came off the bench for 19 minutes with little to show for and Jrue Holiday got the night off to rest his turf toe injury.
Warriors (106) @ Jazz (99)
The Jazz were seriously undermanned in this one. I was excited for the matchup because Utah played the Warriors very close a couple times last season and was curious if a deeper roster might help them get over the hump. However, starters George Hill, Gordon Hayward, Rodney Hood and Derrick Favors were all out for the Jazz in this one. Hill is still dealing with a toe injury; Hayward aggravated the finger that caused him to miss a good chunk of time earlier this season, but is said to be day-to-day; Hood is having hamstring troubles and Favors knee is still giving him problems.
Stephen Curry led the Warriors in scoring tonight with 26 points, five rebounds, three 3-pointers, two assists and two steals. Kevin Durant double-doubled with 21 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, one 3-pointer and a steal. Klay Thompson added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists. Hopefully you faded him in DFS after his 60-point night. Draymond Green nearly triple-doubled with 13 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, four 3-pointers and four steals. He rolled his ankle tonight, so keep an eye out for any injury reports in the near future.
Rudy Gobert had a big double-double tonight with 20 points (8-for-8 FG, 4-for-7 FT), 17 rebounds, one assist and one block. Shelvin Mack added 19 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals in a start tonight. Joe Johnson contributed 13 points, three rebounds, two 3-pointers and a steal. Joe Ingles played 35 minutes off the bench and added 21 points (7-for-13 FG, 2-for-3 FT), five rebounds, five 3-pointers, four steals, three assists and one block. Wow.
Spurs (91) @ Bulls (95)
Kawhi Leonard was solid tonight with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists, one 3-pointer and one steal. Lamarcus Aldridge was not as good with 10 points, six rebounds, four blocks, one assist and one steal. Pau Gasol had a mini “revenge” game in that he was actually decent tonight. He double-doubled with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and one block. Tony Parker still stinks and Patty Mills came off the bench for 16 points, four 3-pointers, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.
The Bulls starting five all chipped in tonight. Dwyane Wade notched 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, one 3-pointer, one steal and one block. Rajon Rondo nearly triple-doubled tonight with 12 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Robin Lopez had 12 points, four rebounds and a block. Jimmy Butler added 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Taj Gibson posted 12 points, five rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
