Welcome to This Week Tonight! Thanks for joining me for ringing in the first week of the New Year, 2016 was truly one of the most exciting years of basketball in NBA history and it was a pleasure to be a part of it with all of you.
Start the New Year out right by checking back here for all the latest rumors and updates. We’re approaching the mid point of the season which is one of the most critical times of the year. Trade rumors are beginning to leak in and we’re going to be seeing a stream of action at one point or another. Now for this weeks games:
5 Games: UTA
4 Games: BKN, CHA, CLE, DEN, GSW, HOU, LAC, LAL, MEM, MIA, MIL, NYK, OKC, ORL, PHO, SAC, TOR, WAS
3 Games: ATL, BOS, CHI, DAL, DET, IND, MIN, NOR, PHI, POR, SAS
Memphis and Miami both go back-to-back on Tuesday/Wednesday and all the big names could be rest candidates in that period.
Brooklyn has two games on Thursday/Friday which could spell trouble for Brook Lopez’s availability.
Utah has a whopping five games and goes back-to-back Monday/Tuesday and Saturday/Sunday. Watch every relevant Jazz player, no one will be a sure thing to play five games in a week in the modern NBA.
Top Pickups for the Week:
Josh Richardson – There’s a definite non-zero chance he was dropped in your league since he was shooting so poorly, but he’s played very well over his last few and is wracking up dimes, points, and triples lately.
Joe Ingles, Joe Johnson, Shelvin Mack, Trey Lyles – Ingles would be my first choice for a Jazz add this week as he’ll likely not play full minutes but stands the best chance to be relevant in all five. Regardless any Jazz player getting 20+ minutes could be added in a five game week (assuming you’re playing a weekly league and not a roto).
Malcolm Brogdon – He’s a strong speculative add after posting a triple-double on Saturday night as Matthew Dellavedova’s (hamstring) status has not been announced for next week as of yet. Hamstrings are tricky so it’s likely Delly misses a game or two at least. Regardless Brogdon has played his way to relevancy.
Toughest Weekly Decision:
Chris Paul – He is already listed as doubtful for Monday and it looks like he may have exacerbated his hamstring injury when he played in Wednesday’s game. Superstars are the trickiest to figure out for weekly lineups as their impact is great enough to overcome limited games played, and the Clippers do have four games this week.
Jeremy Lin (hamstring) is out indefinitely and it’s tough to say when he’ll be back even though the Nets said this hamstring injury isn’t as severe as his first.
Marco Belinelli (ankle) missed Saturday’s game and there haven’t been any strong updates for him.
Kyrie Irving (hamstring) missed Saturday’s game and should be considered questionable for the week.
Patrick Beverley (wrist) is questionable for Monday’s game.
Chris Paul is of course doubtful for Monday’s game with his hamstring injury.
Justice Winslow has a shoulder injury but it’s not anticipated that it will sideline him for long.
Hassan Whiteside (eye) did not play Sunday but is expected to be fine.
Goran Dragic (back) said the two days off really improved his back and is targeting Tuesday’s game.
Dion Waiters (groin) may travel with the team this week.
Matthew Dellavedova (hamstring) has not been updated and his status will strongly effect Malcolm Brogdon.
Kristaps Porzingis has a sore left Achilles’ but is “not worried.”
Carmelo Anthony has a knee issue, which has sidelined him before, though he’s currently listed as day-to-day.
Evan Fournier was listed as questionable with a heel injury ahead of Sunday’s action but was ruled out in the end, his return is likely nearing.
Ty Lawson broke part of his nose on Sunday but is listed as day-to-day.
Rudy Gay continues to deal with a hip issue but likely isn’t trying to rush back for a team he’s constantly trying to be traded away from.
George Hill (concussion) cannot catch a break and has already been ruled out for Monday.
Dante Exum (knee) has already been ruled out for Monday paving the way for Shelvin Mack.
Bradley Beal (ankle) did not play Friday and should be considered questionable for Monday against the Rockets until his status is updated.
