The Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics will hold a preseason game on the UMass campus, according to Brian Seltzer of Sixers.com.
While the Massachusetts connection is obvious, Philadelphia’s participation comes as no surprise considering Julius Erving attended UMass for two years. Dr. J averaged 26.3 points and 20.6 rebounds per game as a member of the Minutemen.
The game, slated for October 4th, will be held at the Mullins Center with Philadelphia as the home team. It continues a trend of the Sixers hosting preseason games in smaller cities, as they have previously played in Albany, Syracuse and Allentown.
More and more teams are playing preseason games in alternative spots, which can only expand basketball’s reach. It’s a good way to reach fans in smaller markets and a treat for those who don’t get the chance to make it out to a regular season game.
