Recently unrestricted free agent Seth Curry agreed and the Mavs agreed on a two-year, $6 million deal on Monday.
This is significantly lower than we thought Curry would fetch as anybody with mild upside has been getting more money than this. Curry has some upside in that we don’t know where the ceiling is on his offensive game.
In a best-case scenario he becomes a solid sixth man or low-end starting point guard. Defensively, he showed good energy and awareness at times and offensively he made plays down the stretch during tanking season. All of this came within the context of George Karl’s mismatched schemes on both sides of the ball. He did struggle against good, interested defenders and defensively it’s fair to question if he would hold up over 82 games in a 25 mpg role.
But at $3 million per year this is a solid deal and it does beg the question of whether or not Seth was going for fit over dollars. He’ll be slotted in the mix with J.J. Barea and Devin Harris off the bench, and Rick Carlisle is pretty deferential toward veterans. That said, he’ll probably be in the mix at some point with how injury prone the whole lot of them are.
