• The Kings are set to play their second game of the preseason Friday night when they head to San Antonio for a rematch against the Spurs.

Head coach Dave Joerger filled his starting rotation with veterans for the opener, which isn’t likely to change, but the bulk of the minutes still went to the rookies. Joerger is clearly trying to give his young players opportunities during the preseason, but he may start to mix in veterans more as the season gets closer.

The Kings started out playing mostly half-court sets Monday night, which was likely a product of the familiarity between Joerger and players like Kosta Koufos, Vince Carter and Zach Randolph. For the five players that started in the team’s opener, the emphasis may also be on rest and health as it is on getting them ready for the season. All five of them have plenty of experience in the NBA, and don’t figure to require nearly as much time as the rest of the team to prepare.

The team went toward a more up-tempo offense when the veterans sat, clearly in an attempt to take advantage of the athleticism of the team’s younger players. While that trend figures to continue during Friday night’s matchup, the Spurs are sure to make adjustments defensively that could make it much harder for those lineups to get out in transition.

Kings fans got their first chance to see the new roster during the team’s preseason opener at the Golden One Center Monday night, but with the team playing for the first time on the road, the team may look much different from what they did in the first game.

It should be fairly interesting to see how the rookies respond to playing a team like the Spurs away from the friendly confines of the Golden One Center.
