According to Albert Nahmad of HeatHoops.com, Rudy Gay has officially declined his $14.3 million player option to return to Sacramento. Back in May, Marc Spears of the Undefeated reported that Gay planned to opt out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent.
The veteran forward is still recovering from a January surgery to repair his ruptured left Achilles tendon that ended his season. Spears reported that Gay was “ahead of schedule” in his recovery process and just recently DraftExpress scout Jonathan Givony spotted the forward “taking jumpers and dunking” at the Roc Nation Pro Day.
Gay currently has a $20 million cap hold and Keith Smith of Real GM notes it is expected the Kings renounce their rights to Rudy Gay to free up that extra $20 million in cap space prior to free agency.
The 30-year-old expects to be ready by training camp and is open to talking with any team during free agency, including the Sacramento Kings.
