Dwane Casey said that DeMar DeRozan’s injured right thumb is a concern and that he will look at updating his substitution patterns.
While the beat writers in Toronto are saying that the thumb is a big deal, the problems with DeRozan’s performance go way beyond a hand injury that’s not bad enough to keep him off the floor. His decision-making and shot selection are bad by any measure and this isn’t exactly new, but rather a function of an underdeveloped player that has relied on athleticism against teams not game-planning for a seven-game series. Look for Casey to use the injury as cover for DeRozan if he struggles and his minutes could be in jeopardy just as they were on Monday night, but he’s still worth a look if his price point continues to remain low.
