Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who had become a fixture in the NBA and NFL world as owner of the Portland Blazers and the Seattle Seahawks, died unexpectedly on Monday from complications of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Mr. Allen used his considerable wealth to become influential in sports. In 1988, about two years after Microsoft’s initial public offering, he purchased the Blazers for $65 million, becoming the youngest owner in major American professional sports at 35 years old. “Paul brought a sense of discovery and vision to every league matter large and small,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. Surprisingly, Mr. Allen had no spouse and no children to leave anything to and it’s unclear at this moment whether his sister, Jody Allen, wants to take over ownership of the Seahawks and Blazers, or one or both.
