Bulls GM Gar Forman told ESPN 1000 out of Chicago that No. 14 pick Denzel Valentine will “have a role” and beat writer Nick Friedell wrote that he “could crack the rotation quickly.”
“He’s a guy who makes his teammates better because of his ability to pass and his understanding of the game,” said Forman. “I think he’s a guy who can play the system Fred wants to play with some pace. So where he plays, exactly where he fits, some of that will be worked out. But we’re pretty confident he is going to fit.”
Valentine is going to be 23 years old when the season starts and he was a stat factory for Michigan State, averaging 19.2 points on 46.2 percent shooting (44.4 percent from deep) with 7.5 boards, 7.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game. There are questions about his ability to shake free from NBA defenders, and of course there are big concerns about reported cartilage damage in both knees. If the Bulls roster continues to trend toward being shallow, fantasy owners will want to keep tabs on him throughout the summer. A late round selection is already in play if we’re drafting today.
