Willy Hernangomez finished with 15 points, two assists, five boards, one steal on 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the stripe in Monday’s win over the Pistons.
Hernangomez played 27 minutes despite the return of Carmelo Anthony to the starting lineup. The rookie was coming of a huge 24 point game in which he played 36 minutes while Melo was out. This is a good sign that Free Willy will still have a sizable role regardless if Melo is in the lineup or not, plus the Knicks have every incentive to play their young center and continue his development. His back up Kyle O’Quinn played 20 minutes going 0-of-4 from the field with six boards and is not relevant.
