Former Cavaliers' general manager David Griffin said JR Smith hasn't stayed in shape after signing for a guaranteed $45.15 million over three years, stating "I think the fact that he got guaranteed money moving forward really made it so he was less likely to keep himself in shape than when he was going year-to-year."
His fantasy performance bears this out: when playing year-to-year in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Smith finished in the top-75 and top-95 in 9-cat. Since signing his deal in the summer of 2016 JR, has finished the last two seasons in the top-180 and top-225. He's getting older and Cleveland has a lot less to play for this season so barring an unexpected turnaround, Smith should once again finish outside of standard league consideration.
