The Heat announced this morning that James Johnson will miss the beginning of training camp because he fell short of conditioning requirements and that once he fulfills and maintains those requirements, he will rejoin the team.
Heat President Pat Riley and team captain Udonis Haslem insisted entering training camp that the team would return to its culture of demanding excellence and the early signs validate that. It is not the first time the team has issued such mandates. In 2006, in the wake of the franchise's first championship, Riley, then coach, banished forwards Antoine Walker and James Posey from the practice floor due to conditioning issues. JJ had received a lot of praise from Erik Spoelstra and his teammates the last week but this is a major setback in his effort to claim the starting power forward position. Kelly Olynyk and Derrick Jones Jr. should be considered to be ahead of Johnson in the depth chart for now.
