Asked at Tuesday’s shootaround if he believes he’ll return next year as the head coach, Jeff Hornacek said that “everybody does expect to be back.”
With the Knicks in developmental mode emphasizing minutes for younger players, Hornacek’s career won-loss record, currently at 156-204, is suffering. The team has lost 13 of their past 14 games and everyone is being evaluated daily by the organization while general manager Scott Perry made the first three games of this four-game trip and isn’t on the March Madness scouting trail despite the looming lottery. The concern is whether Hornacek is losing the locker room and more importantly whether their young guys have shown enough improvement. Emmanuel Mudiay and Frank Ntilikina have struggled since Jarrett Jack got benched while Michael Beasley recently expressed his frustration over the consecutive losses. There is still plenty of basketball to be played but Hornacek is not a lock to return next year as the team might decide to clear house.
