The NBA reversed course and made a one-time exception for Jordan Clarkson in order for him to play for the Philippines in the Asian Games, a tournament excluded from the league’s agreement with FIBA concerning NBA players suiting up for their home countries.
The Cavs guard will miss his country’s first game against Kazakhstan but he will play in the rest of the tournament. A couple Chinese players with NBA ties, Zhou Qi of the Rockets and Ding Yanhuyang of the Mavs, were also cleared for this tournament but it’s unlikely the NBA expands its list of FIBA events it will clear its players for. Clarkson changed his diet during the summer and believes that the Cavs will “shock a lot of people” so it will be interesting to see how he looks in international competition.
