Kevin Durant will decline his player option for the 2017-18 season in order to sign a new deal with the NBA champions.
This was the expected move and surprises no one as Durant’s blockbuster signing last summer was essentially a one year deal. By taking less than the max on a new deal, Durant helps improve the Warriors’ chances of keeping the core of this year’s championship team intact since this will allow the them to exercise their Bird rights on Andre Iguodala. Stephen Curry, Iguodala, Shaun Livingston and and a few others are up for new deals and Curry’s new contract is expected to be much closer to market value, which will take up a large chunk of the Warriors’ cap space. Both Curry and Durant are still no-brainer top five picks in next years drafts but Iguodala is more of a wait-and-see player as there are rumors floating around that he may be considering other teams.
