Giving Isaiah Hicks and Luke Kornet double-digit minutes the rest of the way is now an aim for the Knicks who were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for a fifth straight year on Monday night.
The team will audition Hicks and Kornet in the remaining games of the season in order to figure out if they have found a reliable big man in any of them. Hicks is a four-year player who advanced to two straight NCAA Championship games and went undrafted in June despite being a key cog on the Tar Heels’ championship squad. The Knicks have liked his basketball IQ and his quick grasp of learning but he needs to improve his deep jumper and become a more mobile defender in space. Another priority is evaluating rookie center Kornet, also on a two-way contract and already advertised as a stretch big man. His 3-pointer hasn’t fallen as much as needed as he is shooting just 28.6 percent from deep in 10 appearances. Both players should be on your radar as streaming options since the team might opt to start them giving the occasional night off to veterans like Enes Kanter and Kyle O’Quinn.
