Marcus Smart has agreed to a four-year deal worth $52 million to return to the Celtics.
The deal is fully guaranteed with no options. Smart made some noise at the beginning of the offseason by saying that he felt he was worth more than $12-14 million a season, but clearly the RFA market didn't play that way for him. His return gives the Celtics excellent guard depth an a tough-minded defensive stopper that makes a big difference on the perimeter. Smart's woeful shooting will remain a problem and the emergence of Terry Rozier won't help him, but Smart should get enough minutes to be a low-end source of steals and assists. He might be more of a specialist than a legit late-round pick this season.
