Restricted free agent Nerlens Noel and the Mavs are still negotiating according to Eddie Sefko of Dallas News.
Noel finds himself in a tough spot with the Mavs in the driver’s seat regarding contract negotiations at this point. Though the young center is an attractive asset in today’s NBA due to his mobility and great defensive skills, most teams find themselves lacking the cap space needed to make Noel a reasonable offer. The Mavs know what they have in Noel but also are slow playing the contract talk in order to gain the most value once they sign from the young, oft-injured veteran. Noel could feasibly sign the qualifying offer and re-enter free agency next summer but signing a long-term offer this summer provides him security. Look for both sides to come to the table sometime in the next month or two to work something out. Noel’s fantasy prospects are intriguing for next season if he can stay on the court as he is the perfect complement for Dirk in the frontcourt and has a young PG in Dennis Smith Jr. to get him easy baskets on offense.
