Tim Cato of The Athletic is reporting that the deal between the Mavs and Heat is off after the teams misunderstood who would be sent to Dallas.
Miami believed they would be sending Goran Dragic, with the Mavs insistent that they've been discussing Kelly Olynyk and Derrick Jones Jr. all along. Cato believes that the Heat will have to salvage the trade, and will likely do so with a team other than Dallas. That said, the Heat need to open up space in order to execute their sign-and-trade for Jimmy Butler and their leverage is dwindling by the minute. One wonders if they'll really let the departure of Jones cost them a chance at acquiring Butler, especially as other teams fill up cap space and become unlikely or impossible trade partners.
