The Nets met with Celtics’ restricted free agent Marcus Smart on Monday but it’s still unclear how much interest the two sides have in each other.
Smart and his agent Happy Walters are taking meetings in Las Vegas while the combo guard is now willing to take a salary under $15 million per season. The Nets have a little under $11 million to spend, and Smart told ESPN that he’s worth $12 million to $14 million. Even if the Nets managed to create some more cap space and get Smart to ink an offer sheet, there are still many hurdles and the greater concern is that any deal would have to be for at least two years which could limit the team’s ability to create cap space and offer two max contracts in the 2019 offseason. Smart has reportently been “hurt and disgusted” by the way Boston has handled his restricted free agency, with the Celtics extending him a $6 million qualifying offer.
