J.B. Bickerstaff said on Monday that Shelvin Mack will start the season as Mike Conley’s primary backup.
“He’s earned it,” Bickerstaff said. “The character. The IQ. The skill set. Just the understanding of the game. We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much he can do and how much more is left in the tank.” Mack was able to beat Andrew Harrison and rookie Jevon Carter for the job. The 28-year-old veteran journeyman who signed a one-year deal with the Grizzlies this summer has started more than 11 games in a season once (27 for the Jazz in 2015-16) but sports a solid career line of 6.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The Grizzlies assembled a deep squad this year but as long as Mike Conley stays healthy Mack should have no real fantasy value.
