The Mavs will send two first-round picks to the Knicks as part of Thursday's Kristaps Porzingis trade.
The full details on the trade have yet to emerge but it's hardly surprising that the Mavs had to fork over multiple picks since they are only sending Dennis Smith Jr. and expiring contracts to New York otherwise. We'll wait and see what the protections on these picks are, but it's not a bad part of the package for a player who seemed increasingly unlikely to stay in New York. The Mavs are going all-in on signing KP long-term, and despite his rumored willingness to play next season on a qualifying offer and hit unrestricted free agency that summer, we have a hard time imagining a player coming off an ACL tear rejecting a max-level offer if Dallas offers it up. There's also the fact that Porzingis reportedly loves both Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki, so the Mavs feel confident about their chances.
