Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld said Monday that the team is comfortable with Ian Mahinmi as the starting center.
Marcin Gortat was finally traded away but Grunfeld doesn't take issue with Mahinmi's role expanding. "He's a proven starting center. He's won playoff series as a starting center. … We would be comfortable with that." He also added that the Wizards are talking to other players but would be fine rolling with Mahinmi, so it's possible that this is only a temporary look. The big Frenchman can actually be a pretty solid player but his health has hampered him since leaving Indiana. If he does end up as the starter, Mahinmi can be a sneaky fantasy play as a cheap source of rebounds, steals and blocks. In 2016-17 he averaged 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks in 17.9 minutes while he posted 0.5 and 0.5 respectively this past season in just 14.9 minutes. Something in the mid-twenties would return late-round production.
