Carmelo Anthony has been traded to the Hawks Thursday in a three-team trade that includes the Thunder sending a protected 2022 first-round pick to the Hawks; the Hawks will send Dennis Schroder to the Thunder and Mike Muscala to the Sixers; the Sixers will send Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to the Thunder and Justin Anderson to the Hawks; Anthony will be waived by the Hawks.
It was only a matter of time before Anthony was off of the Thunder and they will see massive savings with this trade. The Thunder save roughly $73 million through salary and luxury tax by trading instead of stretching and waiving Anthony. The Rockets are the frontrunner for Anthony and have been linked to him since last offseason. Anthony saw a tremendous falloff last season in Oklahoma City and does not fit the 3-and-D role the Rockets need, but could benefit from the up-tempo offense. Anthony will be the third option once again and is not the same player he once was.
