Adrian Wojnarowski has tweeted that Pau Gasol will turn down his $16.2 million option but plans on returning to the Spurs.
Gasol will return to San Antonio for a longer contract but earn less per year. This move helps both sides as the Spurs will gain some much needed cap flexibility and Gasol will earn more over the length of the contract. The veteran has continually has helped his team in the past if it means a better chance at winning. This offseason will be very unpredictable for the Spurs. They are unaware of Manu Ginobli’s retirement plans, there were also rumors of the mutual interest between the team and superstar free agent Chris Paul. The Spurs have shown the ability to keep restructuring their roster on the fly to have consistent success; Gasol’s decision makes it appear this offseason will be no different.
