Gorgui Dieng scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting (including a three) with six rebounds, five assists and four steals in 37 minutes off the bench in Wednesday’s win over the Pelicans.
This is real simple. Dieng is either going to be the Dieng that we’ve known for the past few seasons or he’s not, and Tom Thibodeau is either going to enhance those chances or not. Karl-Anthony Towns played just 21 minutes due to foul trouble and Nemanja Bjelica (foot) missed another game. Dieng has just two blocks this season and that’s just not normal, and neither is a steep decline like this but Thibs has his favorites and has been in Dieng’s head as the 27-year-old sits in the doghouse. After tonight, he could keep it going or go back to frustrating output. At 28-30 mpg he can be a top-60 guy and at 22-24 mpg he can be a late-round guy when playing normally.
