Damian Lillard scored 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting with eight assists, but he and his teammates were not ready for the Clippers’ defensive game plan in their Game 1 loss on Sunday.
The Blazers looked shell-shocked by the Clippers’ blitzing scheme against Lillard and C.J. McCollum (nine points, 3-of-11 FGs, three assists). They will need to spread the floor and put Lillard and McCollum on opposite sides of the pattern above the break in order to make the Clippers pay for over-committing the way they did tonight.
Al-Farouq Aminu went for 10 & 12 with one steal on 3-of-12 shooting and was goaded into a lot of ill-advised shots, and Moe Harkless (nine points, three boards, two blocks, 21 minutes) got into foul trouble after being given the gift of J.J. Redick as a defender while he was on the floor. Mason Plumlee (four points, five boards) had a terrible game buying into the Clippers’ game plan of making him a playmaker. It’s not surprising that they struggled in Game 1 on the Clippers’ floor, but their lack of adjustments is certainly worrisome if you’re a Blazers fan.
