Dwight Howard opted out of the player option of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
A lot of folks think Mike D’Antoni’s arrival drove Howard away but this breakup was well under way in the middle of last season. With serious declines in effectiveness and durability he wasn’t a great fit with the Rockets, and they started sending him smoke signals that it was time to find another home in the second half of the year when they cut his playing time. We wouldn’t rule out an ‘I’ll show you’ type season in which he works real hard to prove he can still play, but on the whole this is an asset for owners to avoid.
