ESPN reported on Tuesday that initial contact discussions between Dwyane Wade and the Heat have not produced a common ground.
This is the obvious part. The Heat aren’t going to play their best hand while Kevin Durant is the primary goal and Hassan Whiteside lingers, not to mention the ongoing health issues of Chris Bosh. From Wade’s angle, he has to secure the leverage to force the Heat’s hands and that’s why ESPN is reporting that Wade’s reps are making it known to these teams that he’s willing to leave. His reps will have to push hard to get any would-be suitors to show real, believable commitment as the marketplace will doubt whether Wade will actually leave. In the end it will be a game of chicken as Pat Riley will have to do more than toss his rings across the table — he’ll have to do that and stay under the cap.
