Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday that the Pacers and Nate McMillan are closing in on a deal that would promote him to head coach.
Either McMillan has had a total turnaround in the pace department or this was that questionable hire we referred to when Frank Vogel got let go. McMillan is known for slowing it down and Larry Bird has made a big deal about increasing the pace in Indy. As we’ve seen in Sacramento, it’s possible the pace angle has been over-reported on by the press but one way or another McMillan isn’t known as an offensive coach and it’s hard to push this as an upgrade. It sounds like they’re going for a different voice in the room and only time will tell whether or not Bird’s gamble works — or if there were other reasons for the Pacers to part ways.
