Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has removed Doc Rivers from his president of basketball operations role, allowing him to focus on simply being the team’s head coach.
Lawrence Frank will take over as the president of basketball ops. The divide between Coach Doc and GM Doc has been noticeable, and for all his success on the sideline he failed to get the Clippers over the hump by failing to surround his stars with adequate support. He’s handed out some questionable deals to complementary pieces and never really built a second unit that could hold up without significant input from one of the team’s stars. It’s definitely for the best that he focuses on just coaching this year, as the Clips will have a bushel of new players to integrate and may have to tweak their playbook with Chris Paul gone. Ballmer and Rivers discussed the change, so it didn’t just drop out of nowhere.
