Bucks GM John Hammond says he hasn’t spoken to Greg Monroe yet about the latter’s $17.9 million player option for next season.
Monroe had a very nice season despite exclusively coming off the bench for Jason Kidd and seems likely to opt out given the dollars that will be flying around in free agency. He was long rumored to be on the trading block before the season began, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on. That being said, some teams may be scared off by his poor defensive reputation and lumbering build. He’s certainly an effective post threat but is a dying breed in today’s NBA. His season averages of 11.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals (with .534 shooting) were bested by his nice work against the Raptors in round one of the playoffs – 13.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals. Assuming he does indeed opt out, he’ll be an interesting guy to watch in free agency. The deadline to decline or accept his option is draft day.
