J.R. Smith has declined his player option on Wednesday, meaning he is now set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
With the salary cap scheduled to skyrocket turning down his $5.4 player option makes sense for Smith. For what it’s worth, he has announced that he hopes to remain with the Cavs, but a reunion is far from certain given the team’s payroll. Despite his struggles in the Finals – particularly on defense – Smith is all but guaranteed to earn a raise this offseason.
