Several anonymous NBA executives believe the Irving trade does nothing in terms of making LeBron want to stay and that it is a “forgone conclusion” he is out the door next summer.
The executives may be saying this whether they believe it or not because they would all prefer to give their teams a chance in signing LeBron. The truth is, no one really knows, probably not even LeBron himself. To improve the Cavs’ chances of beating the Warriors, they can likely turn the Nets 2018 unprotected first round pick into another top-50 player (Melo, anyone?), but if LeBron leaves, they’d rather use this pick as a potential building block for a future rebuild. Another scenario has LeBron trying to form a new ‘Super-team’ elsewhere. Teaming up with Paul George and Lonzo Ball on the Lakers is one possibility.
