ESPN’s Tim McMahon reports that the Mavs and Wolves discussed a trade that would’ve sent Ricky Rubio and the No. 7 pick in the draft to the Mavs in exchange for Wesley Matthews and pick No. 9, though the teams appear to have moved on.
Minnesota seems intent on moving Rubio despite a very rough season from rookie Kris Dunn last year. Adding Matthews to the mix would give them an added shooting element but would likely take minutes away from their wings. The Mavs need a point guard in a big way but seem content to pick one in the draft. They’re heavily connected to Frank Ntilikina, though the Knicks are said to have him as their top target at No. 8. However, recent reports have Phil Jackson interested in Lauri Markkanen, so the Mavs could have Ntilikina available amidst a crop of other guards projected to go in that range. Dennis Smith Jr. and Donovan Mitchell fit that bill. Regardless, both parties have moved on but don’t be surprised to see Minnesota surface in other trade talks.
