Stan Van Gundy likes the performance he’s seen from both Stanley Johnson and Henry Ellenson in summer league.
“I really like the way [Johnson’s] playing – I do,” Van Gundy said. “I like the things he’s working on. It’s hard to do that. You’re in a setting, it’s on TV, you want to play to your strengths and he’s consciously playing to work on things. I like it…I think he’s doing exactly what he should be doing here in the Summer League,” Van Gundy said. “Just what we talked about.” Johnson will need to continue to improve his shooting to be a standard league asset, but he has the athletic upside to emerge as a true breakout candidate this season.
As for Ellenson: “His shooting’s got to improve to be able to really stretch the floor, but what he has is that element of being able to put the ball on the floor and get a shot,” SVG said. “He can face up in the mid-post area and jab step and create shots. He’s got a lot of really good things to work with.” Ellenson is currently buried on the Piston’s depth chart, and will need an injury to break into the rotation this year.
