Pau Gasol shot 8-for-17 from the field for 19 points with 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one three pointer in Spain’s 92-73 win over Argentina on Monday.
Spain needed this one to advance to the knockout round. With the win, Spain knocked out the host team Brazil and will take on France in the quarterfinals, much to the happiness of Team USA fans. Gasol was the clear leader on the floor, double-doubling yet again and spending most of his time around the rim.
Rudy Fernandez was nearly flawless for Spain as well, scoring a team-high 23 points (8-of-10 FGs, 3-of-4 FTs) and hitting four threes with seven boards, two assists and one steal. Nikola Mirotic added 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting, adding six boards, two assists, one steal, one block and two threes. After Spain came out slow in Rio, they are picking up steam and have a real shot at a medal.
