The Pelicans chose to start Rajon Rondo on Saturday and the decision paid off in a big way, with Rondo turning in 25 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and a block while shooting 11-of-16 in 42 minutes.
Rondo had been floundering in inconsistent minutes off the bench but was superb in this one, even if the Pelicans nearly blew a huge lead in the second half. He even survived an injury scare in the fourth quarter, returning in overtime to put the finishing touches on a big line. While Rondo will probably stick in the starting lineup for a little while after this one, he’s still more of an assists specialist than anything. We’ll need to see more well-rounded games in this spirit before endorsing him as anything more than that. Interestingly enough, he went 3-of-6 from the free throw line tonight. That on its own isn’t much, but it put him up to just 15 free throw attempts on the season. Him staying off the line will be a huge boost for fantasy owners, so keep your fingers crossed.
