  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis (hamstring) could start on Friday against the Nets.

Ennis missed the last three games and Mike D'Antoni said he may start on Friday which would push Carmelo Anthony to the bench. The forward is a deep league option for threes and steals.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and will miss at least the next two games.

Ennis was expected to miss multiple games so we'll see if he's sidelined for longer than expected when the Rockets provide an update next week. Carmelo Anthony looks like the frontrunner to start at small forward while Ennis is out, even though Houston dabbled with the idea of Michael Carter-Williams holding the job.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis' hamstring injury will keep him out for the next two or three games.

The Rockets are saying that Ennis is only dealing with a strain and that he won't be out long, but he won't be back until the middle of next week at the earliest. Michael Carter-Williams will start on Wednesday night but it could be Eric Gordon who sticks in the starting five once Chris Paul returns from his suspension, as the Rockets have mentioned that three-guard look as a possibility in the past. Carmelo Anthony could also factor in.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis (hamstring) will sit out on Wednesday against the Jazz.

Michael Carter-Williams will get the nod at small forward in his stead. Ennis is mainly a role player for the Rockets and is only a low-end add in 14-team leagues for steals (1.0).

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis scored six points on 2-of-7 shooting with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two treys over 22 minutes in Saturday's win over the Lakers.

Ennis could get more run with Chris Paul suspended however many games, but he's still just a deep league asset at best.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis started again in Friday's preseason finale and was able to produce 11 points, four rebounds, three 3-pointers and two steals in 21 minutes.

Ennis is going to be Houston's starting small forward, and while he'll be the lowest-minute member of the group he's going to have ample opportunity to pick up threes and steals. He's almost a lock to exceed his ADP, though he probably won't get too far inside the top-150.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting (including a three) with six rebounds, two steals and two blocks over 25 minutes in Tuesday's preseason game against the Shanghai Sharks.

If Ennis starts showing a stat set like this he'll be much more desirable as a fantasy option, but chances are he'll settle into a less productive role whether he starts or not. Still, the change of addresses in Houston might work in his favor so deep league owners can consider him as a last round flier.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis is the starting small forward in the Rockets' preseason opener on Tuesday.

Ennis has impressed the coaches in camp so far and the small forward gig may come down to him and Carmelo Anthony, who has been increasingly receptive to a bench role over the last few weeks. If Ennis does win the job and can hold onto something like 24 mpg he might offer enough steals, rebounds and 3-pointers to be worth a late-round flier.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis has caught the attention of the Rockets coaches thanks to his speed and defense.

The small forward job in Houston seems to be wide open and it could come down to Ennis vs. current sixth man Eric Gordon. Ennis is a far superior defender and would make more sense operating in the corner, whereas those "easy" shots would negate some of Gordon's value by limiting his elite range. Ennis is shaping up like a quality flier. He still may be a bit of a plodder but in a steady role he'll be a good bet to provide solid threes, steals and rebounds.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis did most of his work with the Rockets' starters in Wednesday's practice.

With news that Carmelo Anthony could be the focal point of Houston's bench, it opens the door for Ennis to start at the three. Mike D'Antoni is also considering Eric Gordon as a potential starter, so that will be a battle to watch. We'd rather see Gordon stay in the second unit where his usage will be higher while Ennis could pick up a steal and a three per game pretty easily in starter's minutes. He's a definite deep league target and could keep climbing.

  • James Ennis III - F - Houston Rockets

James Ennis told Alykhan Bijani, of The Athletic, that he would get benched if he does not have a career high in 3-point attempts.

"Coach D'Antoni told me in the meeting that if I don't shoot double or have a career year in 3-point attempts then he's gonna bench me. He wants me to shoot as many threes as possible." This is not too surprising as Ennis is expected to fill the shoes of Trevor Ariza. Carmelo Anthony should not snipe many of Ennis' minutes as Ennis was brought in for his defensive versatility. He's a deep league flier right now but is in the perfect situation to shine.
