Dio checks in on a deep rookie class and how things went in Vegas
July 7, 2019, 5:34 pmLuka SamanicPF-C, San Antonio Spurs
Luka Samanic delivered 14 points (5-of-10 shooting), five rebounds, two assists, a steal and two 3-pointers in Sunday's Summer League win.
Samanic did some nice damage in his 24 minutes and showed some versatility to his game. There shouldn't be too many minutes available for him this season with the Spurs trending towards a lot of smaller frontcourt looks and two viable center options, but his skillset makes him a fun guy to speculate on in dynasty formats.

Quinndary Weatherspoon led the Spurs' draft picks with 13 points on Monday in a win over the Cavs in Summer League play.
Weatherspoon also had three rebounds, two assists and a three-pointer in his 21 minutes off the bench. Luka Samanic had the better overall game with 11 points in 22 minutes with seven boards, two assists, a steal, two blocks and a triple. They each turned the ball over four times. The other draft pick, Keldon Johnson, didn't fare quite as well, scoring just four points with two rebounds and a steal in 19 minutes. Of the three, Samanic appears to be the leading candidate to provide any meaningful fantasy value this coming season.

No. 29 overall pick PF/C Luka Samanic said that his plan is to play in the NBA this season, rather than staying overseas according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News.
Samanic moved up draft boards but fell to the Spurs, because of course he did. His overseas squad, Barcelona, refused to play him because that's what they do when they sense players are going to the NBA, according to our own Dio Nikiforos. We need to get a better sense of how his stat set might change in a better location, but owners in deeper Dynasty leagues should definitely take note.

The Spurs have selected Luka Samanic with the 19th pick of the draft.
A very on brand pick by the Spurs, selecting the Croatian forward with their draft choice. Samanic has the size and fluid mechanics that will help him make an immediate impact and he goes from a powerhouse Barcelona team to a storied franchise coached by Gregg Popovich. He's in good hands and although it's not likely that we'll see him make a large impact in fantasy circles, we expect him to earn some playing time this season.
