The Knicks have selected Duke's R.J. Barrett with the third pick in the 2019 draft.

The Knicks raised some eyebrows by bringing in Darius Garland and Coby White for last-minute workouts, but Barrett figured to be their guy all along. He's an instinctive scorer with a frame that suggests he can defend across multiple positions at the next level, and he's helped by a strong basketball IQ. Barrett shot just 45.4/30.8/66.5 in college and is not yet a top-flight shooter or ball-handler, however, and the high volume that could be headed his way in New York is a potential worry for fantasy owners given his efficiency troubles. He seems likely to be overdrafted for fantasy purposes.

R.J. Barrett has been working on improving his jumper and shot off the dribble with his new shooting coach.

Barrett is widely expected to be amongst the top three picks in the NBA Draft on Thursday. Coming into Duke, he was widely considered to be the top prospect in the country but wound up being overshadowed by fellow teammate Zion Williamson. Barrett has the potential to be the best player in this draft, and improving his shot is just the first step in that direction. We will find out which uniform he’ll be donning in a couple short days.

According to an NBA source, the Pelicans have explored moving back to gain more assets and also had internal talks about moving up to the second pick in order to draft R.J. Barrett, who is Zion Williamson’s best friend.

That trade-up maneuver, however unlikely, would allow Murray State’s Ja Morant to fall to the Knicks at No. 3. The Knicks had Morant higher on their board than Barrett at the Chicago combine, but that also was before Morant recently underwent knee surgery. For now, it seems that New York is locked in at keeping the third pick, contrary to a couple weeks earlier, when they were open to moving back. The Pelicans meanwhile continue to explore all possible avenues in order to better use the No. 4 pick which they have acquired from the Lakers in the Anthony Davis trade.

After completing his workout with the Knicks, R.J. Barrett said, “This is the place I want to be.”

Barrett is widely expected to be taken third overall in the draft. The Knicks currently hold that pick but increased speculation about a potential Anthony Davis trade means that they might not hold onto it. Still, the odds are that Barrett ends up in New York. He added that the Knicks are the only team he will meet with and work out for prior to the draft.

R.J. Barrett will workout for the Knicks next week, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Knicks hold the third pick in the draft and R.J. Barrett is the assumed selection if Zion Williamson and Ja Morant go first and second. The Knicks will meet with Barrett, do medical evaluation and light court work. If the Knicks do not trade their pick, expect Barrett to be the selection.

R.J. Barrett has been added to Canada's training camp roster ahead of their FIBA qualifiers.

Barrett, who is headed to Duke as a likely one-and-done player, is a big addition for a Canadian side that won't have Jamal Murray (for now — he mentioned that he might miss some time in July but has otherwise been excited about playing), Tristan Thompson or Andrew Wiggins at their disposal. It'll be a good chance for one of the next top prospects to prove his mettle against tougher competition, assuming he ends up with actual playing time. As one of the 12 best Canadians on the roster, he should make the final cut.
