Yuta Watanabe shot 1-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line for nine points in Japan's 111-81 loss to New Zealand on Saturday.

Watanabe played 33 minutes in this consolation bracket match, adding six rebounds and two assists. He has had difficulty finding his shot, shooting 37.8 percent from the field through the first four games and will try to end on a high-note as Japan takes on Montenegro on Monday. The 24-year old is currently on a two-way deal with the Grizzlies after appearing in 15 games for them last season but is not expected to be part of their rotation to start the year.

Yuta Watanabe put up 20 points, nine rebounds and a triple in Monday's opener at Utah Summer League.

Watanabe shot 7-of-12 from the field and tied for the team lead in scoring with Julian Washburn, who added five rebounds, two steals and five triples on 7-of-10 shooting overall. Both of these players had some moments for the depleted Grizzlies last season but figure to be back-end depth now that Memphis has multiple young pieces to put on the floor at once.

  • Kyle Anderson
    F, Memphis Grizzlies

Kyle Anderson (right shoulder soreness) has been ruled of out Saturday’s game vs. the Pelicans.

Let the tanking continue. The Grizzlies have no reason to play a hurting Anderson when they’re trying to lose games so he might be out until after the All-Star Break. Dillon Brooks (right toe injury) is also out while Joakim Noah (right heel soreness) is doubtful so it looks like Ivan Rabb has another game to shine. Additionally, Yuta Watanabe (left ankle soreness) is probable to play.

Yuta Watanabe (left ankle soreness) is available to play on Thursday.

The Grizzlies will be shorthanded for this matchup with the Thunder, but it's not all that different from last game since Kyle Anderson, Marc Gasol, Garrett Temple and JaMychal Green couldn't play then either.

Yuta Watanabe (left ankle soreness) is listed as probable for Thursday's game against the Thunder.

Watanabe is looking at expanded minutes in the second half, assuming the Grizzlies convert his two-way contract to a standard deal when the time comes. He's only an option in the deepest of leagues for the time being but any players on tanking squads have a chance at deep-league relevance.

Yuta Watanabe (shoulder) has been cleared to play on Friday night.

Watanabe missed the Grizzlies' first preseason game but is good to go for this weekend. The Grizz have a back-to-back so we'll probably see him log more time on Saturday night.

Yuta Watanabe will miss the Grizzlies' preseason opener on Tuesday because of a sore left shoulder.

Watanabe has been dealing with shoulder soreness throughout camp. A two-way contract player, missing any preseason action won't help his quest to make the final roster.

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed Yuta Watanabe to a two-way contract for two years.

The Japanese born Watanabe was the Atlantic-10 defensive player of the year. After going undrafted he played on the Brooklyn Nets’ Summer League team. Watanabe will likely spend most of his time in the G-League getting reps. To make room for his signing, the Grizzlies released Myke Henry who missed all of Summer League this year.
